The Importance of Engagement Sessions

I wanted to take a moment and let you know the main reasons why we offer complimentary engagement sessions with all of our wedding packages. Most people see the obvious, immediate benefits. After all you are getting some beautiful memories captured during a very important time in your lives together, your engagement.

But there are some other very great and very real benefits that maybe many couples overlook. So here are some of the great reasons why we offer complimentary engagement sessions with all of our wedding packages.

1) Getting to know each other better.
Wedding photography is a very personal service. In fact, personality is one of three main factors you need to know about when deciding upon who will be your wedding photographer.

But when you think about it, you will be spending the majority of your wedding day with your photographer and he/she will be there during some of your more intimate and emotional moments. And depending on the photographer’s style and direction (which you can learn more about here), he/she will be with you, guiding you, directing you, posing you, ect. Its crucial that you like and get along with your photographer.

The engagement session is a wonderful opportunity to have a good time with your photographer and to get to know one another a little better. It will help you feel more relaxed and at ease during your wedding day photos.

2) Become more comfortable having your photos made.
For many couples, having professional portraits made is something that they have never done before. The engagement session is a great time to become comfortable with being in front of the camera. This will also help your wedding photos feel and look more natural.

3) Engagement sessions allow you to become familiar with how your photographer works.
He/she will likely give you directions and guidelines like how you should stand, where you should put your hands, where you should look, ect. We know all kinds of little tricks to position you so that you look thinner in camera (not to mention what we can do in post production). After a little while of shooting you will have a very good idea about how we work, what we like, what we don’t like and by the end of your session you will automatically be doing most of these things before we even have to ask.

This is huge time saver for your wedding day! You will go into it knowing what to expect. The photos can be taken faster which in turn will keep you on schedule which will alleviate stress and you’ll end up with even more beautiful photos! Shewwww… that was a mouthful of benefits!

4) The photographer learns how best to work with the couple.
The flip side to you becoming familiar with how we work is we also get to learn how you work (so to speak). Every couple has a different looks, mannerisms, quirks, ect… A natural looking pose for one couple might not work for another couple. What makes one couple smile or laugh may be different for another. Maybe they wear glasses and we have to watch for reflections. Maybe they are what we call “blinkers” (they blink a lot). Hey, it happens. But you get the idea. Every couple is different.

We get to learn how best to work with each individual couple. It’s best if we get to learn these things before the wedding so that when the wedding day arrives we already know what to expect and your photos will go that much faster, smoother, and will look that much better.
